I would put that you use one rated a little higher than your stated load, say 1500W, and one that is double wound (i.e. not an auto-transformer) and which has a three pronged grounded release.

How big are you stopping in the UK? You might find it less expensive to hire a power tool transformer which has 110V outlets. The plugs will be special to the US standard, but you can buy a suitable plug from the tool hire centre where you got the transformer and fix this to a US extension lead.
Note that if the appliance contains a motor or timer then it will to all intents run at the wrong speed. The mains frequency in the UK is 50Hz, not 60.

I legitimate moved from the UK and decided to bring my Dyson with me. It does work, though it has noticeably less power. Does anyone grasp if its possible to get it rewired to work at full power in the US? Or will it never be the same as it used to be?
First of all I will take for granted you mean a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
The only way it will work properly in the US is to replace the motor with the one they would use in the American representation. If you can get such a replacement part it would probably cost more than it's worth to have shipped the Dyson over in the first place. However, if you can get one and replace it yourself or identify somebody. Most vacuum cleaners are made in such high quantities that they don't usually bother making dual voltage motors for them.

I took a look at alternatives because if your Dysan is anything like my wifes it's a $500 apparatus.
1. I don't think is practical. A 1500VA auto transformer connected in reverse. It would be a tad dangerous and it would be a $200 sailing-boat anchor to lug around.
2. I did this some electronics I brought from the UK. If you have a 220 V window air conditioner outlet, you can put a 220 V plug on it and use that. You would purposes have to make your own extension cord to reach everywhere else in the house. I don't really like this because both wires are essentially hot and the vacuum cleaner is not grounded.... but it's all ersatz anyway. Maybe if you could make an extension cord that incorporated a ground fault interupter, that would be great.
