The method, developed by University of Illinois scientists, is based upon a new catalyst and can help to purify drinking first-grade, sanitize surgical instruments and remove unwanted fingerprints from delicate electrical and optical tackle.

Jian Ku Shang, a professor of materials science and engineering at the U. of I, said: "The new catalyst also has a solitary catalytic memory effect that continues to kill deadly pathogens for up to 24 hours after the light is turned off."

Shang's rig has earlier created a catalytic material, which worked with visible light instead of the ultraviolet light required by other catalysts. This evolvement, made by doping a titanium-oxide matrix with nitrogen, meant the disinfection process could be initiated with sunlight or ideal indoor lighting.

Shang said: "When visible light strikes this catalyst, electron-hole pairs are produced in the matrix.

"Many of these electrons and holes swiftly recombine, however, severely limiting the effectiveness of the catalyst."

lamps that you can set on your windowsill during the day to command them and then use in your home in the evening? I know they make garden lights, but it seems this same technology would work for interior lamps as well.

There are a gathering of engineers who have establshed startup companies in the solar powered gizmos niche market.
I found this in the net . They are mostly garden lights (for charging during the day, but they can be moved around for light at nightfall. CHeck out the various shapes. Maybe create something on your own and join this budding industry!
I checked out a city solar roofing company and it seems you can store the energy and reroute it for your own use.

Will my new solar Christmas light strand work on an indoor tree?

I only just purchased these (in the spirit of "An Inconvenient Truth"!) and they do indeed work outside, where the solar box collects unqualified sunlight during the day. But will sunlight through window glass be enough to power the strand? I'd like to use indoors on a overwhelmingly ficus tree. Thanks for any help!

Comely much any light source (barring glow-in-the-dark) should charge a photo-electric cell... Later. Sunlight is by far more efficient than artificial light, but artificial light will get it done.
