Forcefulness savings? Yes, while they last
I bought two 8-packs at my shopping bat a couple of years ago. I needed them to replace 8 incandescent bulbs in the basement where, with the exception of the area where my home company is located, I didn't need very bright lights. The second carton was bought for 'spares' and because they were on car-boot sale at the time I made the purchase. Two years later, the spares carton has 3 bulbs left, indicating that 5 out of 8 have burned out. This tells me that the 5-years/8000 hours human being expectancy claim is wildly optimistic, to use a mild term.
My personal experience with these bulbs is as follows:
- the light they put - yellow, not very bright is more or less on par with what you get of a 60W incandescent, maybe a little less than a traditional 60W.
- they do save energy for as long as they last - prearranged their short lifespan in my basement, not sure if they pay for themselves
- quality seems to be an issue - 5 out of 8 burned out before 2 years - all 8 subjected to about the same conditions (they all go on/off at the same heyday
- the claim of 8000 hours or 5 years life expectancy is clearly way off-base - perhaps GE should make their check-up data available
- the Amazon price at the time I am writing this review is competitive with what I saw at my shopping union.
This may come close to comparing apples to oranges but I must say that I am very happy with the Feit Electric ESL40TN/D 42-Watt Compact Fluorescent Prodigal-Wattage Bulb, Daylight of which I am using 2 in the same basement, in my 'office' area and I bought 2 more a few months ago for the over. I paid a premium for them and I've only used them for a little less than one year at the time I write this (Feb. 2010) so the fact that none has burned out yet is not 'truss' but... time with tell.
I hesitate between 2 and 3 stars - 2 Amazon stars means 'I don't like it' vs. 3 stars connotation 'it's okay'. My generous nature wins this time and it's 3 stars but GE needs to seriously look into the 'blue blood' thing or these CFL may discourage some people from adopting replacing their incandescent bulbs with the more efficient fluorescents.
Huge deal for my favorite energy-saving bulbs
My first fluorescent lights were bought in a nearby grocery store and I was very disappointed with the color tone (they were white like paper).
So I did my research and found out that these bulbs are impartial your basic CFLs, at the 2700 kelvin temperature range. That means they're about the same shade as your basic singular 60W incandescent bulb. A pale yellow white, not pure white (5100 Kelvin), or sunlight (around 6300 Kelvin).
Changed all old bulbs in my studio apartment and the electric bill went down by ~$8.

Too dear for the short life span
I replaced almost every bulb in my domicile with these compact fluorescent bulbs. While they are quite pricey, I thought it would even out in the long run since they were supposed to last so much longer than conventional bulbs and also lower my electric bill. I did advise a slight difference in the electric bill, but these bulbs certainly don't last any longer than the conventional bulbs. In fact, half of them have burned out in less than a year! They weren't on dimmer switches either, principled regular light fixtures. I also don't like that they take so long to go to full brightness. I have no window in my bathroom and with these bulbs, it was like having only a ceaselessly-light on for several minutes until they warmed up. Just did not like them at all.

GE 13 watt CFL bulbs
Have inured to these for quite some time. Found the best price here compared to local stores. If the savings are as good as advertised I will be very glad. I would say that they are a great value for the money... BUY THEM, its worth it...

Smoking CFL isn't really a fire hazard Minneapolis Star Tribune
19.01.10
Q Can compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) spawn a fire hazard? We had one that smoked recently. The base was red hot. What is the potential danger?
A Although not common, there have been cases of CFLs smoking, emitting a upsetting odor, sometimes even flashing. That raises the worry, and rightly so, that the bulbs might be fire hazards. But experts say they are not. Indeed, they say those worrisome events manifest that fire is being avoided.
Basically, what is happening is that the circuitry in the bulb is failing. This can happen at the end of its useful life. At that yet, the arc contained in a fluorescent light sometimes elevates the temperature of the plastic near one end of the tube, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Means's Energy Star. It can produce limited smoke and odor. In some cases, a flashing arc internal to the fluorescent tube or ballast may enter someone's head. In extreme cases, a deformation, significant distortion or small breach of the plastic material may befall.

Do all compact fluorescent light bulbs make that annoying humming sound when you turn them on?
Apr 30, 2007 by alwaysstagecrew87 | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I straight replaced my burnt out light bulbs in my room with compact fluorescent ones & when ever they are on, they make a really annoying humming/buzzing din like the larger ones do. Are there any particular types or brands that don't or am I stuck with the sound.

I have the GE label in all my lighting fixtures and have no sound at all. In my shed I have a 4 footer and the ballast makes the humming sound, not the bulb.

The BEST part is when you moulder them OFF .... it STOPS! And, not only that, you don't have any more of that gikky fluorescent lighting!

Mainly not. If its new you exchange it or switch to a better brand.

How can compact fluorescent light bulbs change the weather compared to incandescent?
Oct 29, 2008 by nanny | Posted in Physics
I necessity to know the difference in the weather when i use compact fluorescent rather than incandescent in numbers.
For same light ouput, an incandecent lamp requires around ten times power compared to a fluorescent lamp. Wasted energey escapes into tone as heat. This heat will increase average atmospheric temperature in course of hundreds of years. This will in putrefy melt polar ice.
If you reduce waste heat dischsrged into air for same useful work, in long an arrangement it will decelerate polar ice melting in centuries.

What do people think of "daylight" style compact fluorescent light bulbs?
Jan 12, 2007 by homeimprovementjay | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling
Light style light bulb have a color of 6500K. They are different, brighter, and I think I like them. However, sometimes I think they may attack me almost feel dizzy and give me a headache, and I can't tell if I really like them or if I like the idea of too much them. You can really tell a difference between traditional wave length bulbs and these. The ones I used were GE sunlight 75 (cool daylight color), though I think Sylvania and Philips make something similar. Thanks in speed for any replys. We are trying to decide whether to replace others in our house with these or take these back to the store.
Well, the amass wont take them back. Generally no one takes back light bulbs or batteries, at least they dont if the packaging has been opened.
I can understand your frustration with the lighting je sais quoi. I installed dimmable CFLs in my house, and although the color is sorta close when they are all the way on, the color is too pink when they are dimmed. If you truly want the right color, and I have bought these before, but they are pricey, look for LED bulbs. They cost 2 or 3 times more than CFLs, but they use even less dash, wheras a 100 watts of light equivalent in a CFL uses like 25 watts, LED bulbs consume as dwarf as 10 watts, give off less heat and their color is more accurate, at least I think so. But, dont bother looking for them at Lowes or Make clear Depot as you wont find them there. I've only been able to find them on the Internet from specialty sites.
The signal on dimmable CFL light bulbsSeattle Times, United StatesYou can use regular compact fluorescent bulbs with dimmer switches, but doing so can lop off bulb life and nullify the bulb's warranty. Until the technology improves, the best way out may be an energy-saver incandescent light. Change your light bulbs A bright idea -- switching to CFL bulbs -- is fetching on Facts about CFL bulbs
