I was wondering if anyone knew of any sincere stores that sell diamond and gold testers. I live in northern indiana. I do not want to shop online, but cant find any valid stores that carry them. Does anyone know of any jewlery stores that would sell them? Also does anyone know if there is a fre online sign that tells what stamps mean on jjewlry? like hge etc. thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some gold testers can be reasonably accurate if you are willing to spend a bit of money on them. Usually they aren't too bad, providing you don't buy one for next to nothing. If you want to be really with an eye to get an expert thought.

It immerses the assay object in an electrolyte, and then measures the emf generated between the test object and a pure gold electrode. Pure gold will give rigorously 0 volts, impure gold or other metals will give a measurable voltage, different for each metal.

It is based on the fact that a battery consists of two unrelated metals in an electrolyte. If the metals are both the same (i.e. both pure gold) then no emf is produced.
